If you want to relax while vacationing in Puerto Rico, nothing will fit the bill better than a day at the beach. But when you’re new to the island, finding the best sandy spot can be challenging.
Not all beaches are created equal, so let’s set out to answer the question…
What Are the Most Relaxing Beaches in San Juan?
1. Ocean Park Beach
A popular spot with locals and tourists alike, Ocean Park stretches from Condado all the way to Punta las Marias. You’ll see a lot of kite surfers here. Parking is available at the area known as El Ultimo Trolley, but it can be scant, so show up early. Sea grape and palm trees provide shady spots, and vendors sell beer, ice cream, and other refreshments.
2. Condado Beach
Just to the west of Ocean Park is the area known as Condado. This is as close as you can get to South Beach vibes while in Puerto Rico. Most of the beaches in Condado are right up against one hotel or another, but not to worry, you are free to enjoy fun in the sun even if you aren’t staying at one of the hotels because all beaches in Puerto Rico are public, according to the law. The water currents can be pretty strong here, so caution should be exercised.
3. Playita del Condado
Playita del Condado is a stone’s throw away from Condado Beach, and the water here is much calmer and safer. It’s a smaller beach, hence the diminutive “playita”. Because of its size, it can get a bit crowded, so you want to show up early to nab a good spot. Perfect for families with small kids.
4. Escambron Beach
Many consider El Escambrón to be the best beach in San Juan. This is likely due to the fact that it’s the only one with amenities (restroom, lifeguards, etc.). The beach offers a two-in-one experience, as there is an area that is better for swimming, with calmer water, and an area that is commonly used for snorkeling and scuba diving.
5. Peña Beach
Peña beach isn’t ideal for swimming due to its rocky landscape, but this is it if there was ever a beach with a great view. You can watch the waves crash against the nearby fortress or take in the sunset with your loved ones.
Conclusion
In this writer’s opinion, the most beautiful beach is whatever beach you are on, but living in Puerto Rico, I know I am spoiled for choice. While most might say El Escambron is the place to be, it really does depend on what you want from your beachgoing experience. San Juan offers something for everyone, so whether you want to chill like a local or feel like you’re in Miami, Puerto Rico’s capital has you covered.
FAQ
What is the least crowded beach in San Juan?
Because of their size compared to the other entries on this list, Condado and Ocean Park tend to have more room for folks to spread out, so even if there are more people, it may feel more manageable. Peña Beach is also somewhat less crowded, but as stated previously, it isn’t really suited for swimming, which is certainly a contributing factor.
Which beach is better, Condado or Isla Verde?
Better is a matter of opinion. You will find a lot of the enjoyable aspects of Condado at Isla Verde as well. Isla Verde is also known for its beachfront property which is a mix of hotels and condos, but as stated previously, that does not mean the beaches are private. That being said, this list is about beaches in San Juan and Isla Verde is technically in Carolina, FYI.
