We’ve all been there. You have been looking forward to a trip for months. You have your lodging booked. You have your plane tickets ready. It’s the night before and you still haven’t packed. Analysis paralysis has set in and you have no idea what to bring with you.
Well, breathe easy, esteemed reader. We put together this guide to make sure you don’t leave any essentials when you visit Puerto Rico. Let’s start with…
Must-Have Personal Documents for a Hassle-Free Trip
1. Driver’s License and/or Passport
It may seem like an obvious first step, but you really should make sure you have your identification ready along with your boarding pass. Puerto Rico is considered domestic travel for the US, so you don’t need a passport if you are a US citizen. A driver’s license or state-issued ID should be sufficient. If you aren’t a US citizen, keep that passport handy.

2. Appropriate Footwear
- Water Shoes: These have been a staple in my family for literal decades. When I was about 12 years old, we were on a weekend trip to Cabo Rojo and part of that included a day at Isla de Ratones. It’s a small cay that you can circle on foot in about 10 minutes. I was doing just that when I stepped on a sea urchin. The pain was pretty bad and to top it all off, the boat to and from the island only did two trips a day. Don’t underestimate the value of water shoes.
- Sandals: A nice pair of sandals will go a long way towards comfort and setting the vacation mood. Just, please, don’t pair them with socks.
- Hiking or Walking Shoes: If your trip to Puerto Rico involves a visit to El Yunque or any other mountainous area, hiking boots are indispensable. You don’t want to be caught slippin’ (literally).
3. Lightweight and Breathable Clothing
- Swimwear: Puerto Rico has some of the best beaches in the world, so beachgoing while you’re here is a must. Aside from that, your hotel will likely have a pool. With how hot it gets here, you will probably want to find somewhere to take a dip, so a swimsuit is essential.
- Light Layers: Speaking of how hot it gets, dress accordingly. Sure, if you’re going out to enjoy the nightlife then you may need to dress up a bit, but for most of your stay here, a tank top and shorts are ideal.
- Rain Jacket: The rain here can be a bit unpredictable at times. If you are going out, keep a rain jacket in your bag.

4. Medication
If you take any prescription medication, be sure to include it in your carry-on or backpack. If you don’t take any prescription meds, it’s still a good idea to pack some pain relief medicine like acetaminophen or ibuprofen as well as some Dramamine if you intend to take the ferry to Vieques or Culebra.
5. Sunscreen
Getting a tan is one of those tell-tale signs that you were on vacation. Unfortunately for a good chunk of people, that tan can easily become a sunburn. You definitely don’t want one of those. That’s why it’s so important to remember to pack sunscreen. SPF 50 will provide you with the protection you need so that your fun in the sun doesn’t become a pain on the plane… back home. Don’t give me that look.
6. Bug Spray/Insect Repellent
Not only are mosquitoes prevalent almost everywhere in PR, but they tend to carry diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and zika. Spending a few dollars on a can of bug spray can save you aches and pains down the road.
7. Deodorant
The weather here can be hot and humid most of the time. Sure, deodorant might seem like a no-brainer, but with how likely it is that you will work up a sweat, you’d be wise to make sure you don’t forget it. The last thing you want while you’re out and about is to realize B.O. has snuck its way onto your person. Ew.

8. Portable Charger
A good power bank (preferably a solar-powered one so that you can always charge your device while you’re out) is extremely handy while you are on vacation because it will ensure you are always ready to capture that next memory.
9. Waterproof Cell Phone Protector
While we are on the topic of cell phones, a dry bag is an excellent idea, too. Sure, beachgoing is pretty much on everyone’s list when they come here, but should you decide to visit El Yunque, for example, you’ll be happy you followed our advice here.
10. Reusable Water Bottle
As it has been stated in this article a couple of times already, it is hot here. Especially in the summer months. You really should make staying hydrated a priority. What better way to keep your thirst at bay than with a reusable water bottle or tumbler?
Conclusion
When traveling it’s always a good idea to be prepared. When visiting PR, it’s a great idea. Using this post as a checklist will ensure that you get the most out of your trip and enjoy yourself despite the quirks and pitfalls you may encounter while here.
